Anne Cogswell (Collier)


Anne joined the St Laurence House Committee in 2010 and has been Chair since November 2016. Anne has had a wide-ranging career as a social worker, mediator and member of Tribunals.

Her extensive experience as a social worker in the health and welfare fields has included hospitals in Sydney, rural NSW and London. Her employment at Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH) included being Acting Social Worker in Charge. For several years, she was the team leader of a multidisciplinary team of 17 professional workers providing physical and mental health services to the local community and working with general practitioners, as part of a pilot project administered by the Department of Community Medicine at RPAH. She established the first full time social work service in the Emergency Department at RPAH and was the first social worker at the Goulburn Base Hospital.

Anne was appointed by the Minister for Social Security as a part time member of the Social Security Appeals Tribunal from 1988 to 2000. She was appointed by the NSW Minister for Health as a lay member to Medical Tribunals and Professional Standards Committees in respect of complaints against medical practitioners between 1990 and 2017.

Between 1994 and 2014 she was a mediator to the Legal Aid Commission NSW (LAC) conferencing programme addressing Family Law matters. From 2014 until 2016 she was one of ten LAC’s Specialist Care and Protection Multi Party mediators on the issue of contact between Department of Family and Community Services and parents and other interested parties of children who were in care and protection.

Anne holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Diploma of Social Work from University of Sydney.
